Passport application - Embassy of Hungary

Passport application

Passport application can be submitted only in person by prior appointment.

If you would like to arrange a passport, please request an appointment in advance at consular.bku@mfa.gov.hu .

For your appointment, please bring the following documents with you:

  •  valid Hungarian passport or ID card;
  • previous (maybe expired) passport, if any
  • Hungarian address card (“lakcímkártya”), if any
  • in the absence of a valid Hungarian passport or Hungarian identity card: a valid identification document with photo, issued by an authority (e.g. driving license, foreign ID, passport), or Hungarian birth/marriage certificate showing the applicant’s current name.

If you request the new passport with a different name that you had in your previous passport or ID card, you need to provide the Hungarian supporting document which proves the change of your name (for example a certificate of name change, new birth certificate or marriage certificate).

When submitting the application, the applicant's biometric data (photo, fingerprints and signature) will be recorded digitally.

Duration of the procedure, receiving the new passport

It is not possible to apply for an urgent and fast-track passport at the consulate. Such fast-track procedures can only be initiated in Hungary.

To receive your passport, you can choose from the following options:

  • posting to your address in Hungary;
  • receiving in Hungary at the local Governmental Document Office (“Okmányiroda”);
  • receiving at the customer service of the Central Governmental Document Office (“Központi Okmányiroda ügyfélszolgálata”);
  • pick up in person at the Consular Office of the Embassy;
  • posting to your address in Azerbaijan.

Passports are delivered from Hungary to the Consulate General at certain times; so the average procedural time is 3-6 weeks, including delivery to the Embassy. Please take the procedural time into consideration when planning your trips with the new passport. Since the procedural time can be longer, please do not buy any travel tickets (flight or bus tickets etc.) before your passport is delivered. The Embassy excludes all liability for any damages deriving from the late arrival of the passports.

If the applicant does not have a valid Hungarian passport, identity card, Hungarian citizenship certificate or naturalization document, and the personal data and address registration system does not verify his/her Hungarian nationality, a Hungarian citizenship examination must be carried out ex officio. In this case, the passport procedural time shall be extended by an average of 3-6 months, but the citizenship examination procedure can be even longer.

Validity of the passport

Passports can be issued with 10-year validity. In special cases, one can apply for a so-called “second passport” with a maximum 2-year validity.
